To understand and really appreciate the animal intelligence we must stop projecting our own emotions in animals. Horses, sheep, dolphins, dogs, birds and bees can perform cognitive feats of memory and action that are obviously beyond our capabilities. Budiansky shows the evolutionary reasons for the limits of our intelligence and imagination. Throughout the book, check out concisely the different studies that have been made on such diverse animal mind aspects such as the use and construction tools, the capacity for, body and verbal communication, and the evolution of the consciousness of oneself and of others. His main argument is that rather than try to teach to apes the language of signs or pigeons have, we should look at the abilities of animals (the ability of horses to use mental maps of their territories, or the sheep recognize the individual faces of their peers). The conclusions of the author are summarized in the following paragraphs: there is a great continuity in the intelligence of all vertebrate species; the discontinuity between human and nonhuman animals and is the result of the emergence of language. The language is a form of communication different from all others: allows people to have thoughts on thoughts. Today the main challenge them to students of animal behavior is therefore designing experiments which may serve to distinguish between reasoning about mental States and reasoning on observable behaviors.
